St. Joannes
The ancient house “masía Casa Gran” is located in the village of Sant Joan Samora in the area of Alt Penedés. The first reference to Sant Joan Samora dates from 1080 while the first reference to Casa Gran dates from 1453.
The house, at an altitude of 180 m above the sea level, sits next to the Romanesque hermitage of Sant Joan Bautista, built in the 11th century. Together they conform an architectural group of great beauty.
The winery has 20 Has of land, with a combination of recently planted as well as 50 year old vines of different grape varieties including some autochthonous like Macabeu, Xarel.lo, Cabarnet Sauvignon and others like Tempranillo and Viogner, all of them cultivated with great care.
After many years as supplier of the most important wineries of the area, in 2007 and under the direction of the oenologist Oriol Guevara it was decided to estate bottle all the production. "St. Joannes" is the outcome of this adventure, a wine of great expressiveness and character, in two versions, white and red.
The name St Joannes honors a saint ancestor of the family and it also honors the name of the village Sant Joan Samora in which the vineyard is located.
Its historical cellar room utilizes "cups" (underground frets of stone) from the 18th century, after the stay in stainless steel tanks.
St. Joannes produces wine combining traditional methods and modern technology. They are oenology oriented to obtain maximum quality and expressiveness in their wines.
